I have so little time to write and I tend to prioritize everything...and quite frankly, there's a great deal on my list that comes before talking to myself! Unless you somehow stumbled across the link and arrived expecting to find something interesting, or received a radio signal through the fillings in your teeth...this little virtual environment is probably a bit like a window that someone might glance into while passing through.

So! What would you see?

Well...TODAY you'd see something that hasn't been lurking for awhile....NEW LINKS!!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 159px; height: 155px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bjyJyAmkXlI/TtwpVf5rHmI/AAAAAAAAAP0/2UwNg4nPrlE/s200/tsiheader_01.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682462279152115298" />Yes, I've updated all of the download links, and added something new for amusement. The Scrapbookcircus file collection has a new home online, new files coming, new pages...and if you don't own the equipment to create these things and don't want to be limited to a system that restricts creativity to cartridges... you can find an electronic Die Cutter to suit any budget just in time for Christmas at That's Scrap Inc. If I’ve been reticent over the last year or so, it’s because acknowledgment could have little bearing on what you found here. That is going to change. There is a commonly held perception that ONE is less than two in relationships. For me, it’s meant something else entirely; the definition can be found standing among the words in the poem above.
Creative expression in this medium has introduced new challenges, because time is a resource -- I have a career, my son, the same responsibilities as two. What it demands now is discipline. The funny thing about this quality is that it’s something I can draw upon…just like paper… and I’m looking forward to picking up my pencil again. But first...I work today.

Goosebumps! When I scrapped this, I added three additional critters to the page, so the additional geese will be joining the flock. The title cuts in three big pieces----one purple, one black, and one orange layer ...with a few extra orange and white parts for the critters, so it isn't a lot of work to assemble.
I used pencils, crystal lacquer and stickles on the lettering to give it depth, and filled each of the "bumps" with a bit of lacquer to make them look glossy. I love the way this page looks! The spider and web are part of the Halloween file I created last year.

Ellen (Ducky's Designs) also has a bonus file to accompany November's Ntitled file collection. The current month features files for Thanksgiving, turkey, wall sentiments, cards, Christmas, holidays at the cabin, birthdays and kids! This album was an incredible challenge to create...my intent several years ago was to design something to acknowledge this theme from as positive a perspective as possible...and even convey a little humor. While I realize that this is a serious subject, I approached this project keeping these thoughts in mind: A small amount of laughter can take the sting out of the worst situation, and science has proven that a patient with a positive attitude has a better chance of surviving Cancer than one who focuses on fear and despair. If I had to walk this path myself, this is exactly what I would have created to mark my journey.

I created this book by specific request and it has been a few years since I made the original, and recently recreated the design in AI, EPS, KNK, GSD and SVG formats so that it could be cut using a digital die cutter. The scan (left) and files linked below are one of several examples I have to share this week. This layout was inspired by photos shared by a friend---her son wore a cast throughout the summer, but the injury didn't keep him out of the swimming pool! His ingenious Mom invested in one of these SUPER cool waterproof sleeves and saved summer! *grin* (Who even knew these things exist?! YUCK! I'm also sure that if we let him continue digging, he'd be somewhere near the center of the earth by now. The last thing I want to reinforce with this animal is the concept of digging holes.)
SO! Don't forget the sunscreen...Get your digging tools here and get started:
Download the Beach Pail and Shovel Cutter File free with any purchase

The zip contains an AI8 file (WPC users can choose IMPORT from the file menu, ungroup and have a ready-to-cut image), KNK, SVG (separated by color for SCAL users), GSD (for Graphtec cutters like Wishblade, Silhouette, Craft Robo, etc), and EPS.
Before I forget...the BOGO sale on cutter files has ended at http://www.thatsscrapinc.com. If you purchased files during the sale, you have until the end of the month to claim your free files of equal or lesser value from each respective designer. The design team has also launched a new membership called the N'Titled Club. It's a monthly cutter file membership which guarantees 20 or more files each month, each available in AI, EPS, SVG, KNK and GSD (with a few WPC and bitmap varieties added in!). The introductory price for a 6 month membership is $50, while individual monthly memberships can be purchased for $10. The files are delivered as a single complete zip at the beginning of each month, so there's no need to go looking or remember to download. Every file carries a license for commercial use: that means that anything you make with these can also be resold on or offline, as long as your license number appears on the item and the designer's name is given for reference. The current month's membership files include summer themes which relate to several subjects--- fishing, weddings, beach, sunshine, etc and can be previewed here: June N'Titled Membership.
If you have an electronic die cutter, chances are...you'll be able to use these. You don't have to use a die cutter, and no commercial files will be shared. You don't have to have a cutter to play!) Whether you have a Cricut with SCAL, Craft Robo, Wishblade, Silhouette, Pazzles, Gazelle or KNK...Stamps or just cut or print by hand...as long as you intend to have fun...it doesn't matter. Considering how many occasions there are throughout the year to have a card on hand, this could be an extremely useful swap...and maybe an opportunity to actually be caught up BEFORE Christmas!!

UPDATE: This swap is now filled! Rick Mercer is a name synonymous with Canadian politics and irreverent humor. Most of the time, the Rick Mercer Report delivers a political perspective that involves humor with teeth. This particular episode has most of the same ingredients, although it's less influenced by political satire: watch and laugh! I am observing a theme this week: Buried Treasure! The pictures below have something in common, although it may not be apparent at first glance. If you've arrived in search of a clue to locate the mouse-eared variety of buried treasure ferreted away by my favorite feathered friend Ducky...I've begun by sharing a picture of the file she has hidden on her site and will provide more obvious clues as the saga below unfolds. *grin*

<----This is a Petsafe electronic dog collar. I bought it on eBay awhile ago because it has an audible warning option to barbecuing the deranged dog who thinks that frolicking in the center of the road and calls to COME! have more to do with playing tag than genuine safety or discipline. The dog also charges the terrified mail lady as she delivers packages to my door, making it very difficult to convince her that the fence actually IS high enough to contain the monster. THIS had to stop. Soooo....on the day that this wonderful invention arrived, the dog was present as usual to perform his ritual fit at the fence where he successfully drove the uniformed intruder away...but not before she managed to deliver this box. The projectile landed at my feet where she launched it over the gate, and the dog danced with excitement when I carried it into the house and tried to open it with a box-cutter while avoiding the investigative wet black nose that kept getting in the way. OH joy! The collar had arrived!! We've owned one of these before, and the dog recognized it the instant I withdrew the remote control. I didn't see him for the remainder of the day. While he was missing...I stitched a longer strap to the one provided (the monster has a much larger neck!) and replaced the short-hair electrodes with longer ones which would be more likely to penetrate the monster's woolly coat. When he reappeared at mealtime, I bestowed the new necklace on the despondent critter and marveled at the fit. Fast forward several weeks. The dog has been behaving fabulously! I haven't even had to barbecue him because the warning noise is all that was required on the three occasions I felt it was necessary to hide the remote behind my back! Our mail carrier no longer lives in abject fear of the monster lunging at the fence, and actually has been comfortable enough to approach the gate and toss the mail and packages right on the porch or hand them to me! YAY! Fast forward another week...My partner is working in the yard, and notices the dog carrying something that looks suspiciously like a manila envelope... with entrails hanging out. A game of tag ensues, and he captures the prize: a half-chewed, mostly slobbered-upon red bra which I purchased online. GRRR!~ My partner is almost as annoyed as I am, because the neighbor enjoyed watching this game of tag over the fence and then told him that the color didn't suit him. A day or so later...the electricity went out, and since I'd already read every book in the house and couldn't mangle email, do laundry or even play loud and expressively annoying music... I decided to expend my energy working in the back yard. While collecting tools that my partner had left out under the grapevine, the maniac dog frisked past. He was carrying an envelope. My first thought in hindsight was pretty ridiculous: HEY! He's delivering the mail, now! COOL! The battery was dead on his collar --something my partner had discovered during his romp with the bra bandit-- and I knew that it was now sitting harmlessly on the table indoors. So did the dog. Retrieving that envelope was QUITE a workout. I ran a marathon to get it, and I was disgusted when I realized that the prize was simply a Hydro bill. While I stood there huffing and clutching the soggy paper, it finally occurred to me: the question that I should have asked when the gnawed garment had first been recovered. WHERE is the REST of his treasure buried?!
(Are you still thinking about Ellen's red garden??
Ooo GOOD!!! Because the next picture is a CLUE!!
It's a beautiful FRAME within a FRAME!)

It took some time to find the monster's treasure: he'd hidden it very well. I discovered several packages and a small mountain of soggy junk mail, flyers and bills at the back of his kennel. The second bra that I'd been waiting for was in there, along with 10 packages of hermafix refills ALSO purchased on eBay, a package FILLED with brads that I'd ordered for scrapbooking, a postcard from Singapore, and three books that I'd never be able to read. I couldn't tell if the pages were fused by natural moisture or by the bandit's unnatural saliva. I could not identify one of the packages: It had been partially gnawed open and I had no idea what it might be or where it was from. The heavily bubble-wrapped contents may have deterred the canine fruitcake from destroying it, since exploding objects near his jaws would have been uncomfortably reminiscent of the day he bit a balloon. There was nothing left to identify the sender, and it had clearly been weathered outdoors by rain and the fluffy white menace with teeth. I packed everything indoors, sat down at the computer and promptly ordered TEN batteries for the electronic collar (the device will NEVER be rendered impotent again!)...and deliberated the concept that perhaps this animal isn't quite as cellularly challenged as I first perceived: I suspect that he's been thieving mail from the deck for several weeks and "burying" his treasure in the kennel...ever since the collar arrived!

I dreaded opening the bubble-wrap: I was certain that whatever it was...it could not have survived whatever it had suffered. I had no idea how long it had been in there, but it looked like it may have been an eternity in bubble-wrap years...and they might be measured in dog years. But there it was, and the mystery was solved while I sat in amazement: it was signed, and it was in pristine, beautiful condition. (Thank you God!) MANY weeks ago, I answered a few questions that this wonderful lady had when she was dealing with an infected computer. I never dreamed that she would acquire my mailing address or insist on mailing a gift to express gratitude-- much less something this beautiful. She made it herself, and because she had signed it... I knew where it came from. THANK YOU Carol!

I can't imagine what how ungrateful it must have seemed that anyone could receive a gift without a word of acknowledgment--- the delivery may have been a bit delayed, but it is even MORE appreciated than you realize because you made it and signed it, and it genuinely WAS a buried treasure!
As for the mail bandit...I threatened to barbecue the fiend next time I caught him lunging at the mail carrier or the fence, but he seems to think I'm bluffing. One of my creative peers (Ducky!) has also been designing letters of the alphabet and it occurred to me that her current letter H would be a fun match to cards and owl-flavored projects, too. The "Happy Birthday" banner which appears on her letter H (seen here: http://www.duckysdesigns.com/knk.html )could easily be paired with this little guy---I'm sure someone else will be able to use him, so have a HOOT and go play with paper!
Zip contains GSD, KNK, SVG (for cricut users with SCAL), BMP, EPS and AI (for WPC users: just choose IMPORT from the file menu and the AI version is ready to cut).
Download:
Free Owl file

I used this little owl in one of the knotholes on the tree bark overlay I created here, and filled the remaining knotholes with photos. If the same project appeals, you can find the tree bark overlay available for purchase separately at http://www.scrapbookcircus.com. You'll need a cutter which can cut at least 12" wide and a good sticky mat in order to cut this file. The overlay is all one piece, so it's not nearly as much work as it looks. Between the owl and bark...I spent a whole 10 minutes finishing the page....which is rare for me. I could definitely get used to it, though!

Living the Life...by Example!

73 and still able to burn rubber...you can't help but love an example who won't let life pass by---not only "Living the Life", but giving it a good run with everything he's got! I found myself thinking about this video after I'd finished watching, and I really hope they win. That "Welcome" voice scared the daylights out of me when the page loaded!
This wild bunch of animals isn't particularly scary...unless you're afraid of a challenge! If you're in the mood to play with paper...you can earn each of the critters and pieces in this file by participating in challenges on the forum. The challenges aren't difficult; you can participate by organizing your scrap area, playing with paper remnants, utilizing a sketch or trying a new technique... or even playing a game! There's something for everyone, and you can preview the list here: http://thatsscrap.yuku.com/forums/75 (If you are not already a member, you will be required to register and be approved before participating.) There's no deadline, and the files are available in GSD, AI, SVG, KNK, EPS and BMP. The characters would be suitable for birthday cards, zoo pages, greetings, family humor and would complement a variety of subjects by adding specific titles such as "The Mane Event!" (lion) or "I look UP to you!" (Giraffe), etc. Have fun!

Keeping up with Tradition...

Just because it's a new year, I decided to stick with tradition and welcome the annual nasty cold germ with a box of kleenex, several packages of Tylenol Cold and Flu, and a voice that sounds NOTHING like the one you'll hear when you launch the page. (Yep, I added a chat thingie. If you have the volume turned up, it's scary. It talks every time it loads, so I no longer feel like I'm talking to myself! Neat, huh?!)

Scrapbooking is one of the few activities that doesn't have to take a back seat to cold germs, so although I haven't been able to enjoy the scent of felt markers or adhesives while I'm under the antihistamine influence...I still managed to play with paper. I've been making a year-in-review layout every year since I started scrapbooking, so coming down with a cold seemed like a good opportunity to focus on compiling content for the annual project. These are the only pages which don't include pictures in our own books, but they're probably the most-read pages in our albums. Viewers will flip through pages with photos or journaling, but EVERYONE stops to read these. The first one I scrapped was 7 years ago now...I didn't begin making copies to sell until 2005 because they're so much work, but when I read back each year...the things that have changed in less than a decade would already be long forgotten without these little 'notes' and I'm reminded that the labor was worth it. My first effort was a little less polished than today's result---You can definitely see a progression as my scrapbook habit evolved, although the same characters appear indulging in various forms of mischief on all of the layouts. One of these days I'll probably need a whole album for them! If you haven't considered scrapping something like this, I hope you'll be inspired to make your own each year. There's a printable version of the 2006 and 2007 pages at http://www.thatsscrapinc.com if you'd like a head start, and for those who have access to electronic die cutting equipment like the KNK, Pazzles, Gazelle or Cricut with SCAL...watch for the file. It's available in AI, KNK, GSD, EPS, SVG and Bitmap image formats in the cutter files section.

I think the snowman got his hat back...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 156px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HkmS_aGm6jg/SYoKVf0MdII/AAAAAAAAAEo/VsUE0s8hTmc/s320/hat-swrill_away.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5299059275988759682" />
The snowman must have found his hat by now! That's not exactly what I would describe as behavior demonstrating a social conscience, is it?! Soooo....if you've been chasing a hatless snowman around here, keep an eye peeled for the little winged menace that might be lurking instead. You probably won't want to be jabbed with an arrow if the medical attention later involves the distribution of chocolate instead of bandaids!
(Well...on the other hand...I would probably accept the chocolate and decline antibiotics. We're supposed to get snow later tonight, so maybe you can find a place to put this thing until I have time to frisk in a snowbank and build another snow dude to wear it again. The thrill of frozen pipes, shoveling the driveway and scraping windshields will be difficult to pass up, but I'm sure I can find time to roll a large ball of ice across the lawn so the dog will have another snowman to bark at. In the meantime...I've been accused of hiding files a bit TOO securely, so I'm going to make it easy this time. All you have to do is FIND THE FREE FILE!!

I suppose you'd like to know what you're looking for, eh? Well...here's the thing. If I tell you, it won't be a surprise!!
If the effort is more like work than fun, I'm going to let you in on a little SECRET: I had fun hiding the file, and it could be hiding in several different places. On this page. And I REALLY hope you have as much fun looking for it as I had hiding it. *grin*
Well, okay. I didn't want to make it TOO annoying. If you're extremely resourceful...some of the posts in the comment area may be of interest. There's actually more than one file hidden here. *grin* Just in case you're as obsessive as I am.

You're not lost, are you?!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 185px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HkmS_aGm6jg/SXYu_yhoMVI/AAAAAAAAADk/9CA9ur0p1B8/s320/kreativbloggeraward.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293470085450051922" />
WOW! I didn't think anyone read my blog. *grin* I was under the impression that people arrived here by accident, floundered around in search of an exit, and eventually found their way to wherever they actually meant to go in the first place. I even considered putting up confusing road signs to keep them hanging around a little longer: Turn left right here. You are in Kansas, but your red shoes may be gnawed by my half-wit dog if you click the heels together. Just stay still...DON'T MOVE! NO clicking allowed! (Well...okay. Unless you're looking for the snowman's hat.) I received this Kreativ Blogger Award from Esther at http://estherscreativedesigns.blogspot.com/ ! Thanks Esther!
I'm supposed to list 7 of my favorite things, but I've decided that there's an easier way to see what happens when people arrive here.... We shall SEE if you're paying attention! HA! I've taken a few liberties with the Favorite Things list. Leave your response in a comment and I'll save you the trouble of looking for my file. (NO, not the snowman file. The free one that's always hiding here!) The visitor with the highest total in points will have to cough up their mailing address. I'm insanely amused by surprises, so you'll have to torment me in order to get me to tell you what I'm prepared to send.

1. Guess what my favorite past time is? (3 points)
2. Do you know the name of my son? (5 points)
3. Do you know the name of my dog? (3 points) Read previous posts for the answer: (5 more points)
4. The last book I read was by Christopher Moore. Guess what it was? (3 points) What's YOUR favorite author? (3 more points)
5. Hermafix dots or Xyron for me. What adhesive do YOU use? (3 points)
6. Can you identify this quote? "Maybe just once some one will call me 'sir' without adding You're making a scene." (3 points)
7. Spend time doing something totally irreverent? My secret vice: http://notalwaysright.com/ (3 points) Add a quote to the site and provide the link back in your reply (10 points)
8. BONUS: leave a comment on any of the blogs I've linked below. Yes, I WILL check! (3 points each.)

Now I'm to list 7 blogs I think should get this award. They were supposed to be available at Sears, Toys R Us and Costco, but everywhere I went....the stores knew what I was talking about, but had never received a shipment. Apparently D REX sold out in the US long before the holiday, and never crossed the Canadian border. It was the one thing that my son seemed quite rabid about this year, but we just couldn't cough up. Santa delivered a 3ft roaring remote-control "Spike" dinosaur instead, and left the note above. After reading it, our son declared: "That sounds like Santa made it up. It's a story, or Santa made up a big fat lie!" While I was trying not to ruin the moment by succumbing to laughter, he added: "But that's okay...I like the other dinosaur!"

We decided that we would attempt to deliver the creature for his birthday instead...if it could be acquired. Since this special occasion arrives only a few weeks after Christmas, I knew I wouldn't have much time to resurrect the dinosaur from Toyland extinction. I've been hunting for it without much success for WEEKS! Today I discovered D Rex online in one of the VERY few places he'd hidden to escape capture and I purchased the beast. My son practically did a headstand with excitement, while I have been doing my best to avoid thinking about having my head examined: The dinosaur was almost U$160 shipped. This is quite a bit more than I would normally consider a reasonable amount to spend on an 8-year-old birthday gift. I still remember being quite content with a $10 Superstar Barbie around this age, and I'm pretty sure that the dog is going to end up even more traumatized by the purchase than my wallet. (You can probably still smell it burning.)

As usual...there's a scrapbook page lurking in my imagination in reference to the subject, and the more I think about it...I'm finding myself a little more enthusiastic about the whole thing. I'll give you three guesses what's going to be on it. If you waste the first two guesses on photos and adhesive...we're BOTH going to need therapy!

The HUNT is on!

The TSI Design Team at That's Scrap Inc. have begun to display Frosty's hat on their blogs. It represents an affordable alternative to the larger machine, and although it does not feature a laser guide for Print and Cut projects (as the MAXX does), the 800grams of force and 13" feed will be MORE than enough mechanical jaw to chew most of the media that the average scrapbooker will consider feeding to it. I still have the early model 13" KNK, and the newer 15" MAXX. If the new 13" Groove is really just a scaled-down MAXX, you'll be amazed to find it in the $560 price range. These machines are FAST; they cut, emboss, engrave and "pounce" (dashed line) on everything from paper to chipboard, balsa wood, craft foam and soft metals (dogtags, trophy plates, etc)...and this is a price that will be hard to resist or beat. Check out the specs on the 13" knk here, and then ask Mr. Claus if one of these things could find their way under the tree. *grin*

That's Scrap Inc Cutter Files Black Friday SALE!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 213px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HkmS_aGm6jg/SS_B3W6vBLI/AAAAAAAAACk/ltuSL9lLW1U/s320/image00130.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5273646845463037106" />

The bi-annual sale of the year of the year has begun! Cutter files are 30% off at http://www.thatsscrapinc.com. I just uploaded 15 more files...and I made quite a few of them with holiday gift projects in mind. The rest of the file designers at the store have been busy, too! If you wish to take advantage of the sale, the discount code is valid from November 27th to November 30th 2008, and you can enter this code in Checkout:
gobblegobble
Turkey Day in the US sounds a lot like the Canadian version of Boxing Day, which falls a day after Christmas. I have theorized before that they might have named the Canadian date descriptively for competitive behavior standing in line-ups outside stores, but now I'm wondering... Why is it called Black Friday in the US? It may be a dark day in history for turkeys...but I really like the idea of being able to get a better deal and a foot up on Christmas shopping BEFORE Christmas. The seasonal leftovers of most Canadian household budgets usually haven't rebounded from Christmas in order to truly take advantage of Boxing Day sales, so the arrangement across the border seems like much better retail planning. On the bright side...lurking indoors with leftover turkey instead of standing in a lineup isn't exactly a hardship: shopping online is something we can do any time, and no one will tell you to drop the drumstick while wandering through the store. *grin*
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thats Scrap Inc Forum - Cutter Tips and Tricks - Convert KNK to GSD (using CS3 Adobe Illustrator)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 264px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HkmS_aGm6jg/SRynwUEtrNI/AAAAAAAAACE/GYvdMuFwVBI/s320/knk2gsd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5268270112580676818" />
Thats Scrap Inc Forum - Cutter Tips and Tricks - Convert KNK to GSD (using CS3 Adobe Illustrator)

This is one of the most common questions asked about using the KNK and converting files : How do I get a KNK file to GSD? The dog went for the camera. If I uploaded the next 6 pictures...you'd see a blurred sequence of the canine missile attempting to neutralize the object in my hand. The dog thinks there's something fishy going on with cameras, which makes it QUITE a challenge to take his photograph. (Actually...it's already a challenge for me to take pictures. I seem to have a terrible handicap with dead batteries, flash units that don't work and lenses which won't focus. A moving target doesn't improve the quality of my photography. For a scrapbooker, this is a terrible thing to admit. Or threatening someone with a camera. OR breaking my finger, which was twisted in his collar this week while attempting to re-capture the escapee. He prefers to play tag when called. The problem of course is that this is a very unsatisfying game if only ONE of the participants is genuinely interested in the activity. BAD DOG!!

It's a good thing that Cashmere is cute, because seriously...if we had to rely on his current level of intelligence, we probably would have had to name him Darwin instead. I'm sure that you have better things to do than stalk my naked little blog, but I decided to dress it tonight with something frivolous. In the mood for a laugh? Keep reading!

Many years ago, I was an avid painter. I worked mostly with canvas, watercolor and acrylics, but I wasn't picky...I'd done everything from silk-screening to painting sponsors' logos on race cars, lettering on boats, windows...you name it. I eventually converted one of the bedrooms in our house into a sort of studio and my art fetish was relegated mostly to a relaxation hobby while I worked full time. I had a mid-grade airbrush with a small compressor that I didn't use often, and I pulled it out and dusted it off one day, feeling the itch to play with it. The darned thing had been packed away for so long that the compressor didn't work! Undeterred...I went out and bought a new one. The sales clerk talked me into buying this flashy high-powered thing that weighed a TON and had a price tag to match! I lugged the monstrous thing home (very pleased with myself!) and settled in to do some "serious" painting.

I used one of the translucent inks that I liked instead of the usual watery acrylic...they have a concentrated pigment that withstands thinning unlike anything else I could run through the airbrush, and they weren't a nuisance to clean my tools later. I banished the dog from the pseudo "studio" (Fleetwood was a pure white Kuvasz...not quite a year old then, full of puppy exuberance, and he followed me everywhere). An hour later...I was finished playing. I opened the "studio" door to find Fleetwood lying in the hallway, and immediately noticed a blue line down his back where he'd been lying pressed up again the door. He got up while I was standing there gawking. I realized that the fine mist from the airbrush must have vented under the door while I was painting. I started to laugh, and then Fleetwood sneezed. Several little dime-sized blue spots formed on the hardwood floor where the drops of moisture had been forcefully projected...and I freaked out. I ran for the mop, worried that the ink would stain the wood.

In a panic, I hauled out a bucket full of water, wet the mop and swished it across the floor. On the first swipe, the mop drew a HUGE blue streak as if I'd loaded an enormous paintbrush with blue paint. "ARGHhhh!!! OH NO!! AAAAAAaaaaHRGH!" Everywhere I ran in a frenzy...it looked as if I were painting the hardwood blue!! The dog went bananas, thinking that my lunatic behavior was part of a new game, and blue paw-prints appeared EVERYWHERE I scrambled with the mop. It literally took me the rest of the day to wipe down every surface in the house to lift the ink, and I found blue "dust" for months afterwards every time I cleaned. But THAT wasn't the worst of it! I was startled by the dog's blue tongue when he grew tired of chasing my mop and sat down to pant. I locked him in the bathroom until the floor dried so he couldn't recreate the pawprint design, and decided to bath him. *groan*....BIG mistake!! My white dog came out of the bath as blue as grannies' hair, and it WOULDN'T wash out!! *more wailing!!* (The color lasted for weeks!)

Most people assumed that the freaky color was deliberate because it was close to Halloween, but...I had a tough time beating back guilt! The poor dog was an eerie sight! I never took pictures because I couldn't imagine having a visual reminder more damning than personal recollection, and I didn't want any animal rights fanatics to have hard evidence that suggested that I might NOT be providing a safe and loving home for puppy. The next day when I returned the high-powered compressor....my hair was as visibly blued as the dog's had been. (I brutalized my hair that weekend, trying to get the color out before I had to return to work on the trading floor. I couldn't imagine how much worse things could be, but showing up at work and being verbally tortured by the 500+ men who worked in the trading square and acted like it was their own personal locker room didn't sound like a good thing. HAHahaa!! It was difficult enough for women to work down there, never mind survive the chauvinistic "meat market" prank-filled environment without bringing blue hair to the equation!)

Anyway...when I arrived at the art supply store, the same clerk that had sold me the compressor the day before took ONE look at me and started to smirk. I lugged the compressor up onto the counter, waved my finger under his nose and pointed outside. "Before you start with the smart remarks, I dare you to go to the door and take a look at the dog sitting in the back seat of the car parked out front. While you're processing the return, I need to see SYMPATHY plastered on your face. If I hear a single snicker...I'm going to bring that big blue monster in here and let him hear you scream for mercy!" (Fleetwood's appearance was startling ...my 150 pound bright blue Kuvasz was sitting happily in the back seat of the convertible, blue tongue hanging out. He perked right up when the clerk went to the door and the guy very nearly peed himself trying not to laugh aloud.) I believe that the belligerence in my voice was mitigated mostly by my idiotic appearance, but once the return had been completed, I placed a single bottle of blue ink on the counter: "I'm going to need another bottle of this stuff. I think I may have missed a spot."

As for that last full bottle of ink...I still have it. *sigh* I re-discovered it tonight as I was searching my paint case for a brush, and the recollection of the experience offered just enough motivation to share the humor. If you've somehow found your way here and managed to waste several minutes reminiscing with me, there's a moral to this story as well:
Bigger isn't necessarily better. *grin*

When Sheepdogs won't count sheep....

What do you do with a sheepdog that won't let you count sheep?

This is the first opportunity I've had to write in weeks. Well...without falling asleep on the keyboard, that is. I'm a little concerned that I may be indulging the risk of sleep-related electrocution if I perform a face-plant on the keyboard and drool happily into the electronic keypad while I'm snoozing. Oblivion only interests me if I can be sure that I'll be waking up when I'm supposed to! (The important part of that phrase was in italics-- it'll be clearer in the next paragraph!)

Part of the reason I've become almost narcoleptic at the keyboard lately is our crazy dog. (Aka BAD dog!) The fluffy one is now about 4 months old (-a toddler in dog years?!-)...and at this rate, I think his brain will have to double in size in order to maintain a pace relative to his extremely uncoordinated puppy body. *grin* The big hairball does not have a serious bone in his canine body, which has made discipline a surprising challenge. It's difficult to communicate a sense of guilt to an animal that KNOWS when you're trying not to laugh. "Bad Dog!" isn't nearly as effective when you're suppressing laughter, and he behaves like such a fruitcake and is SO playful that it's impossible to remain unaffected by it. The lunatic lately has decided to become somewhat nocturnal. In fact...the desire to play fetch seems MOST pronounced between 2 and 4AM. Oddly, this is usually when the occupants of this household prefer to sleep.

Even though his people-waking skills currently don't include barking, fetch is equally effective when it involves the retrieval of stolen blankets or pillows. (If you've never had a pillow jerked out from under your head while you slept, you haven't lived.) Having learned quickly that this method delivers instant results...Bad Dog has now graduated to the theft of miscellaneous articles of clothing during the day. Since he doesn't appear to require sleep and the sleep-deprived co-habitants of the household are usually only able to keep up sluggishly between yawning and unpredictable bouts of apnea, this is also an exhausting form of mischief! His favorite items to liberate from the laundry hamper have probably been chosen simply because they exist in a greater quantity than everything else: Cashmere likes to steal socks.

Moments ago...the Sock Monster (AKA Bad Dog!) returned to the cave-like space under the desk and gazed at me with a tantalizing expression: there was another sock hanging out of his mouth. (Apparently I've ignored him long enough and he wants to play "fetch" again. *SIGH*) Everywhere I go...I find socks! I could be living with a centipede and not have this many socks scattered throughout the house! I should probably be grateful that he hasn't made an effort to steal them WHILE we're wearing them....but I can't help but wonder if it's just a matter of time before we no longer have matching pairs to wear anyway! It's dinner time and I have a dog to chase, so I'm going to post this while I'm still awake. *grin*

Waiting for the light

What are we waiting for...?!
They arrived alone and in pairs, some whispering, some frowning: smiling and staring, in groups heralded by shrill voices and muted laughter. Others moved deliberately and in silence, cloaked in the anonymity of the mass migration. They circled like moths, hovering eliptically under the dim radius of the beacon, transfixed by its unblinking glow. Mesmerized, they pressed and milled together, sighing with impatience, focussing with hypnotic expectance on the promise of the light. Drawn like steel filings to the charged post of a magnet, they formed a compass beneath the sphere and waited...waited. Bags rustled. Fabric whispered. Feet shuffled. The murmured syncophany of voices rose and fell, a narcotic monotony of unidentifiable words and sentences. Nothing mattered: they were sheep, huddled together, drifting aimlessly, waiting...waiting for the light. Hypnotized by their collective purpose, they stared without really seeing, eyes glancing from object to individual without absorbing detail. Contact was limited to rare, uncomfortable and fleeting passes of vacant eyes, precluding personal connection. Still they waited...waited. More sheep reluctantly joined the flock and lifted their eyes helplessly to the beacon. Their eyes glassed into reflections of the fixed, vacuous stares of those surrounding. And they waited...waited. Transfixed with mindless anticipation, they waited, eyes lifted, entranced by the suspense of the moment. The light would beckon....

(have you guessed yet...?!)

...until the elevator arrived!
